Bereavement Bags

Okay, okay. The title of this blog sounds awful. But it’s an idea you might enjoy using. I thought I might begin to post a few ministry ideas for deacons’ wives (or any Christian).
I was the pastor’s wife, and it seemed that every time I would make a visit to the home of a bereaved church member, I’d hear the same comment. Betty had stopped by as soon as she heard about the death, and she brought a whole bag of much-needed paper products. There were napkins, toilet paper, paper towels, paper plates and cups. She’d just knock on the front door, share a hug and a quick prayer with the person who answered, and show God’s love in a tangible way. But how did she do that so fast??
So when I was visiting with Betty at her home one day, I mentioned how much I admired her thoughtfulness and promptness in those many situations. “Follow me!” she said, and led me out to the garage. There, on the top storage shelf, was a whole row of grocery bags, brimming with paper products. She was ready for ministry.
It doesn’t take a lot of money or time. It does take some preparation. Your ministry during times of crisis may be different from Betty’s, but careful planning and sensitivity to needs makes the difference. Will you show His love when crisis hits your church members?
“And if you give even a cup of cold water to one of the least of my followers, you will surely be rewarded.” –Jesus (Matthew 10:42)
Keep on shining!

This is a great idea. I have a similar set up in my basement for different occassions. I try to buy everything on clearance and then have it readily available at different times. People think that I’m “good,” but I tend to think that I am just well organized:) and quite thrifty.
